First Captain
Johan Peggeman, 33, has always been devoted to life on the water. Despite his father’s efforts to explore other educational paths, Johan was determined to attend the Shipping and Transport College in Rotterdam, where he trained as a pilot/skipper. By 21, he had purchased his first ship and began working in the dry cargo shipping industry. Now, he shifted career and exchanged jogging pants for an ironed uniform, turned from self-employed to employee, and changed from a small crew to a large international team. Johan is now 2nd captain and says with a big smile, “I should have done this a long time ago.”
Luxurious river cruisers now operate almost year-round, from early spring through December for the Christmas markets. The winter period, when the ship is idle for about two months, is used for safety training, courses, and maintenance. It is a varied and enjoyable job. River cruise schedules are fairly fixed, offering a great work-life balance with alternating weeks of sailing and time off, making it easy to plan your free time. The work is dynamic and people-focused, with never a dull day. Plus, you get to explore beautiful cities and enjoy a holiday atmosphere on board.
You know, I’m really excited about this—I’m becoming a true ambassador for passenger shipping and I’m trying to inspire others to make the switch too. My brother’s also a captain, and I keep telling him about how much I love my job. I’m hoping to spark his interest as well.
If you’re a sociable person looking for a new challenge as a captain, I’d definitely suggest spending a few days on a river cruise ship as an intern. Rivertech is open to this, and they offer fantastic employment terms that are right in line with the market. I’ve had interviews with other companies, but Rivertech stood out as the best choice for me. Here, you’re not just a number; you’re truly valued as a team member, and you have lots of opportunities to grow. Plus, the work-life balance is excellent. When I’m off duty, I’m really off, so I get to spend quality time with my wife and two kids.
Overall the second captain is the reliable back-up for the first captain and is able to replace him when necessary.
