Swapping a home office for the dynamic world on board

Sometimes, life takes you exactly where you’re meant to be. For Joanna, that meant swapping a home office and a laptop for the dynamic world of working on board. With a passion for travel, adventure, and meeting new people, she’s setting sail this season as a Sailor with Rivertech. But how did she get here? And what makes life on board so special to her?

A personal word from Joanna

From remote work to open waters

Joanna grew up in Poland with a deep fascination for water and travel. Yet, her career started on a very different course. “As a data analyst, I mostly worked from home, just me and my laptop,” she explains. “I missed the energy, new experiences, and real connections with colleagues. There’s so much more to life than just a home office.”
Her curiosity for life at sea was sparked by the stories of her father-in-law, Oscar, who has been a captain at Rivertech for years. “He always speaks about life on board with such passion. The idea of working with people from different countries while exploring Europe really inspired me.”

A strong start

Before making the leap, Joanna wanted to be well prepared. “I had already been on board several times, once as a guest and later for an introduction as a Sailor. That experience gave me insight into both perspectives. What’s important to guests and what’s expected from crew members. That will help me in my new role.”
Her adventurous spirit is a perfect fit for this career switch. “In my free time, I love riding my Suzuki motorbike. I enjoy rolling up my sleeves and taking on challenges. I found my place quickly on the Excellence Crown in the start of this season.”

Sports, team spirit and new challenges

Besides her love for the water and motorcycles, sports play a big role in Joanna’s life. “I love going to football matches and playing volleyball, both indoor and beach volleyball.”

Joanna has been on board now for a few months. She started as a light Sailor and became a full Sailor since august. “I had to learn a lot of things, but thanks to the crew it was a fast-learning curve. I really enjoy being on the water, seeing a lot of different cities and having contact with a lot of people, both guests and crew. I like that I can explore Europe and challenge myself at the same time. The captains teach me already to sail on the rivers which I really enjoy and give me the motivation to keep learning to become Captain one day.”

You can have this too

At Rivertech, sailors work in a team on board our river cruisers, directed by the First Officer or the Second Captain. As Rivertech manages the fleet for esteemed English and German speaking tour operators that wish to see spotless and impeccable ships, and service with a personal touch, your role is evident. Your work and presence are very visible to the guests, and your welcome aboard smile is priceless.

The multi-cultural team of sailors is responsible for the exterior, the deck and captain’s assistance during mooring and lock operations and safety drills. For the guests you are extra important on embarkation day and in emergency situations, as you are qualified and well-trained for this.
