Linking pin between Captain, Customer and Office

Popke Dillingh

Corporate Fleet Manager

Connecting the dots

The Corporate Fleet Manager plays a pivotal role in the seamless operation of our river cruise fleet, serving as the crucial link between the captains on board, our valued customers, and the corporate office. To excel in this role, a Fleet Manager must bring to the table extensive experience as a captain, paired with exceptional social skills. This position demands a delicate balance of being the eyes and ears for upper management, while also serving as a trusted advocate and support system for the crew on board.

Not an easy task

Being a Fleet Manager is no easy task. It requires deep knowledge of nautical operations, including the ability to anticipate and respond to challenges like fluctuating water levels. The Fleet Manager must be intimately familiar with the rivers we navigate, the specific ships in our fleet, and, above all, the complex regulations governing inland shipping across Europe. This expertise ensures that our operations run smoothly and in full compliance with all legal standards, while also maintaining the highest levels of safety and satisfaction for our guests.

In this role, the Fleet Manager not only supervises and guides the captains but also fosters a cohesive and effective communication network between all stakeholders. By understanding the unique demands of both the maritime and corporate environments, the Fleet Manager helps to maintain the operational excellence and superior customer experience that our company is known for.

A personal word from Popke

I’ve always believed that growth comes from opportunities, and at Rivertech, those opportunities are endless. Of course, you come in with your skills and experience, but what really sets this company apart is how they give you the space to develop and grow into new roles. That’s exactly what happened in my case.

After working on ships as a sailor and later as a captain, I became 1st Captain on the Excellence Empress. At that time, this ship was not yet managed by Rivertech. Some time later, when the nautical and technical management of the vessel was shifted to Rivertech, I decided to make the switch too. From day one, it felt like the right move. I started as the 1st Captain, and after proving myself in that role, I was promoted to Corporate Captain. Today, I’m proud to serve as the Corporate Fleet Manager.

The role is challenging and busy. I often feel like I’m playing chess on multiple boards simultaneously. The dynamics and the speed of action can be intense, but that’s exactly what drives me. When everything is running smoothly, I take the opportunity to connect with the captains and crew on board. Those conversations are invaluable; they help me find ways to improve our systems across the fleet.

When I’m not on duty, I love spending time with my family, whether that’s walking the dog or enjoying moments with my wife and daughters. My love for water started early. I grew up in Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands, surrounded by water and sailing boats. Even now, whenever we can, we head north and get back on the water. Sailing gives me a sense of calm and excitement that’s hard to describe. It’s like a virus; you either love it or you don’t. I think working in the river cruise industry is the same way. It’s not for everyone, but for those who love it, it’s incredibly rewarding.

If you’re passionate about what you do, like I am, I’d highly recommend considering a career in this industry. Rivertech has given me the chance to grow and thrive, and I couldn’t be happier with where I am today.
