As Second Captain aboard our luxury river cruisers, you are an essential member of the nautical team and immediate back-up for the First Captain. You work in very close cooperation with, and under guidance of the first captain, which could be your future position too.

The tasks and duties of the Second Captain are focused on administrative handling, guidance of the onboard team and of course on navigating the ship. You are under the patronage of the First Captain, who’s end responsible and will delegate tasks to you. Your contribution is very important and valuable to the overall ship performance and the satisfaction of the guests.

A personal word from Cosmin

I chose this job because my father worked in this field, and it’s something I grew up seeing. It was very interesting to me from the beginning, and my first thought when I stepped on a ship as a sailor at 21 was, “By 30, I’ll be a captain.” I can say that my dream became a reality at 28.

When I am not on board, my passion is cooking. I like to think of myself as a bit of a chef at home for my friends and family. What I enjoy the most is hiking in the mountains.

What I like most about my job is that it’s never boring. I get to travel every month, even if it’s often to the same places. I can’t imagine having a typical 8-hour job where I’m always thinking about weekends. Here, I enjoy being surrounded by people from many different nationalities, speaking with new people every day, and hearing various stories.

Your role in safety:

• Check safety on board the ship according to regulations
• Co-responsible for cleanliness, hygiene, and order on board
• Responsible for lifesaving and firefighting appliances.
• Planning and execution of the safety drills.
• Keep the watch book.
• Train new crew members.

Administrative tasks:

• Monitor and update certificates, credentials, and approvals.
• Various administrative processes and reporting.
• Exchange information with the office and other stake holders.
• Check patents and crew books
• Daily update of the crew schedules

Steering and navigation:

• Keep track on compliance with timetables and lock times.
• Monitor consumption of consumables (gas oil, water, lubricants).
• Maintain professionalism and safe ship operation.

Additional duties:

• Train and assist new employees in work and grooming standards
• Conduct frequent ship inspections, also on mooring lines and wires.
• Participation in meetings and company relevant trainings.
• Good contact with the authorities, WSP, ports, etc.
• Manage sundeck according to safety needs and guests’ expectations.
• Ensure crew is wearing protective equipment and gear.
